Advocate: Slade Gurr (02/20/2020)
In early January (2020), I received a message from a long time friend of mine, whom I have not heard from in quite a while. David and I were roommates when I was living in Venezuela as a missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. David cut to the point pretty quickly…
“… I am writing because, in reality, I am desperate. I don’t have anyone that I can turn to for help…”
I reached out to David and discovered that his wife of 13+ years is pregnant. This is no simple statement. I know from several past conversations that this is a blessing they have long sought after and were very excited to get the news. David explained that a few weeks before she started to lose feeling in her legs and lower back.
Due to the nonexistent healthcare for all systems, he has been unable to get her the needed medical assistance. He located a private facility that would see him, but it was going to cost. David spent his life savings that he had gathered for a home ($1,500) and was now in need of another appointment to get a diagnosis. David and I discussed options, with some of the donations that I had, I was able to help him cover the next appointment so that they could get a diagnosis. I was unable to provide him with the full amount he needed so the Church also helped, and he sold his car, which he got sold for $300.
David’s wife was diagnosed with antiphospholipid sindrome and placenta previa and put on strict bed rest. I don’t know all the details of the medical condition, but it is my understanding that she will likely have to deliver c section, and the treatment is far more than David can earn on his own in the socialist economy of Venezuela. This treatment is not available to him through the government healthcare system.
David and his wife have been trying for years to grow their family. They are working hard to make sure she and the baby are ok. David is still in need of assistance for her to keep getting medical care. Our prayers are with David and his family. We would love to be able to continue to help them. I will update as things progress…
