Familia Cano

ADVOCATE: Slade Gurr
November 28, 2018
I reached out to Familia Cano (actually he is a single dad). He received his Visa to Chili and had been trying hard to get there before his deadline arrived. I knew the deadline was approaching and I wanted to see if we could help him get there. I offered to help with some of his travel but did not have enough to make up what he was lacking with his plane ticket $800+. He said that he was pretty confident that he would not be allowed into Peru or Ecuador if he were to travel by land, but he felt like he should try. He said he had faith that things would work out. I had $200 in the donation account. I told him that he could have everything I had left. He was very grateful and he was able to pick up the $200 in Colombia on his way.
When he arrived in Colombia he tried to get into Ecuador and was stopped at the border. Although he has a legal visa to get into Chili, he could not get into the other countries by land. His only option was to fly out of Colombia directly into Chili. He told me that he found a flight but the most affordable one was still $460 over everything that he had.
He informed me that he was waiting around in Colombia to see if things might change at the border. His paperwork had some deadlines on it that left him just a few days to make it happen. He contacted the local bishop and was assisted for a day or two.
I was contacted by him a few days later and he informed me that he found a flight out on the following Monday (it was a Saturday). The flight was reduced in price and the local members had pulled some of their money together and he was now within $150 of being able to purchase the flight.
It just so happened, that one of you sent me a $100 donation the day before. With 4 hours before Western Union Closed on Saturday (not to open again until after the flight left), I was able to send him $200 and he literally got the Western Union within an hour of its closing. He was able to purchase the ticket and immediately left for the airport, as he still had a day’s travel to make it to the airport on Monday morning/sunday night. He traveled all day on Sunday. He sent me these photos after he got drenched by a storm.
He arrived at the airport and pulled a redeye flight to Chili.  In his travels, he found that the family he had planned to stay with in Chili had some family problems, and they were no longer able to host him. He told me he wasn’t worried. He had faith that things would work out and he would contact the local ward for assistance initially. Sure makes me grateful for all I have, and makes my faith pale in comparison at times… I asked him if he still felt that Chili was where he was supposed to be, and he reassured me that anything was better than Venezuela. He felt like even though he was homeless and penniless he was in a prime position to help his daughter by getting established and then bringing her over. He had already arranged it with his ex-wife and he had faith that God would provide. He thanked you all many times for the assistance and for helping make it possible for him to arrive in Chili where he can take advantage of this new opportunity. He said that it all seamed impossible 30 days previously, but he knew it was where he was suppose to be.
He sent me a photo of him standing in front of the Chile temple.
